This is a lamaist practice or ritual in himalaya that may be called the "chod" practice. Chod means cut, cut the ego for the liberation of the spirit.

Gyaltsen Gurung writes:

It is the place where i live. The lama is preaching family god. It is usually done yearly, but some family perform it monthly basis. My family perform it yearly, regardless of the situation. it is said that if you stop performing the ritual it will bring destruction in the family. So, it is true that we never miss our yearly preaching. We don't need to do it by ourself but we have someone who is called lama. But, it should be performed by the selected lama which our grandfather requested. If that lama died the ritual should be performed by his followers. If something bad happened; we pray for it at that small temple on the roof top.
