Thatched house village
Near Anantnag, Kashmir
A small medieval village in the foothills of the Kashmir valley. The houses are adobe (mud) with straw thatching for roofs, arranged helter-skelter on meandering streets, without straight lines -- that is without the need for vehicles. This picture was taken about 1976.

This town is now completely different from the old view that you have posted on your site. No longer medieval, it now has now a muncipal council & has a status of a city.

This village stood next to a hill that stretches out into the Anantnag town. It was razed to ground in early 2000, in one of the fire-fights between Indian troops and the insurgents. The village folk moved out and found shelter in the town, but the town grew and now this village is part of the municipal authority of Anantnag. The snow looks like a shroud. Entire Kashmir is grey now. It has lost its colour and gaiety.
