Dal Lake

Kashmir

Farmers haul hay across Dal Lake to livestock in Srinagar. While the lake remains open all winter, the surrounding hills are snowbound. I'm standing on a small island like the one in the background of this picture.

The islands in many Indian lakes are manmade. Diving in
one you will find that at some point in history rocks and even jars are at the base of some, others surround trees. Surmise that they may have offered protection or just a quicker trip to work for a boatman. Interesting how humans alter geography and over time forget.
