Farmhouse kitchen
Taichung, Taiwan
I was walking by an old farmhouse in southern Taiwan and noticed no one was there, even though the steam pot was boiling. It's a simple kitchen with brick stove, wood oven, and big holes on top to take the large farm-sized pots.

We were guests of a farming family east of Tainan, Taiwan in the early '70's, and this might as well be their kitchen. The elders were former school teachers during the Japanese period, and we were told they spoke Japanese between themselves when alone. We were treated to boiled chicken and cabbage. The farm raised pigs, and it took two bus changes to get there, and wasn't more than 10 miles from downtown Tainan. It was surrounded by bamboo and sugar cane. The mountains were imposing, not too far off, although draped in haze.
