Lumber sawers

Chitral Valley, Pakistan

The way you make lumber in this part of the world is you saw a log into planks yourself. It takes two. If there is a lot of sawing to be done, they will dig a pit to allow the lower sawyer to stand. Two experienced guys can accomplish quite a lot in a day, producing a dozen very sturdy planks.

Mark Huckabee writes:

Last year my family and I toured Colonial Williamsburg. This is a "preserved" city that appears just as it did in the late 1700's. I witnessed a scene almost identical to this one where the colonists were sawing logs for a new barn. It amazes me that something we see in a museum is a part of everyday life for these people.
