During my travels in Nepal in 2001 I took the opportunity to chat with two porters that came my way. Each of them carried a sack of rice (about 50 kg) and on top of it a huge pile of firewood. They told me that when you start the job you take between 25 and 30 kg, but that after a couple of years a good porter can carry up to 80 (!) kg. I don't know, if they exaggregated a little, but the rice and firewood was impressive enough. Also I was frequently overtake by heavy-laden porters while going uphill only with a small backpack. All that well above 3000 m...
