Rice planting, Takayama

Japan

Modern Japan has long supported small farmers despite its rapid industrialization. These three women plant rice by hand in a small flooded paddy in the mountains near Takayama. The seedlings are grown in thick carpets of green in a small pound near the farmer's house and then spaced out in rows for the summer.
