Farmer with tabi shoes

Kyushu, Japan

A farmer in the southern island of Kyushu trues his saw, after he sharpens it. I love his boots with big toes -- a very traditional style.

E (Gaijin Henro) writes:

His shoes are called Jikatabi and are often worn on construction sites etc. I first saw them in white when doing the Shikoku Henro Michi trail in 06. A pilgrim was wearing them and I found out they were very old traditional pilgrim (henro) dress rarely worn nowdays.
Similarly, 'cloven' socks are called Tabi.
