Bamboo shoots are a delicacy. They are cooked in soups, and occasionally eaten raw. They have to be hacked out of the ground as they first poke through the leaves. It's hard work.

The man is trying to dig up a bamboo shoot in a bamboo grove. After rain, lots of bamboo shoots come out from the ground. There is a Japanese proverb, 'Ugo no takenoko', means 'bamboo shoots after the rain'. The expression means that several things happen one after another like bamboo shoots after a rain.
