Protest March
Tehran, Iran
I lived in an apartment above a carpet store in the main shopping area of Tehran. This photograph was taken from the roof of my flat during the Khomeini revolution in Iran. The protesters were aware of my presence. Indeed, after the women left I went down and was welcomed by the students and men. They told me, "We don't hate Americans, just the American government." That's a distinction I wish more of us could make.

I lived in Afghanistan and Iran from 1973 to 1978. I found both the Iranian and Afghans to be very friendly, but a distrust of the US government was certainly stronger in Iran. At the time, the US was supporting the Shah and helping train their army while charging them outrageous sums. Their distrust of the US gov't was justified.
