Turban Styles

India

I loved the turbans that men wore. Unwound, these turbans could reach 20 feet in length. There is a real art to wearing them and keeping them on. Also, if you have a turban, it's great to have facial hair too! A nicely trimmed beard or better yet a mustache! Most of these fellows are from India, but one is from Pakistan, one from Afghanistan, and one is not a fellow at all, but a small girl.

Ashwin Mahajan writes:

These are mostly different turbans worn in the Indian Sub-continent. Turbans are similar to hats in the west; they are worn for a variety of reasons - religious like the Sikh man in Pic (r3,c1) or to indicate clan. The turban is also treated like a crown, and any disrespect to ones turban is not easily toloerated, while at the same time, taking the turban off is a sign of submission in most clans but for the Sikhs.
The pic (r1,c2) is of a solder or a policeman. The pics (r4,c2) and (r4,c4) would either be from Pakistan or Kashmir, Pathans most likely. The rest are most likely Indian.

roman Capalbo writes:

Turbans have a mind of their own. When I see a turban I always like to see the neat patterns and bright colors.I like to see all the different ways people tie them. The 9th picture in the 3rd row is tied how the sikhs tie it they were taught not to cut their hair so they just put it in a turban. The 6th picture in the second row is worn by the high honored people or rajas. The 2nd picture in the first row is worn by a guard. Most of the turbans showen are most common in Rajiathan and Johpur.
