Summer mist

Yangshuo, China

Along a slow moving river a farmer follows an ox to plow his rice field in the oppressive heat and humidity of mid-summer. In the background is a lovely arch bridge, beneath the shadows of karst cliffs.

I bicycled through the Yangshuo/Guilin area of China around 1990. Yangshuo was just becoming a stop on the the banana-pancake circuit. Shared a few silent, knowing moments around a fire with a couple of teenagers tending their cows. Met a another group of kids who gave us a tour of their village, karst caves and all. Previously reminded of this haunting place by a documentary about the cormorant-fishers there. Saw it at the Banff Film Fest some years ago.
