My mother was born in Myanmar (formerly Burma). We went back after 50 years in the UK. I later became a Buddhist monk there in 1996 and met Aung San Suu Kyi's after her first term of 6 year house arrest...I painted her portrait which started my exhibition "Looking for Burma" a collection of paintings prints and writings...
I visited a Nat Pwe spirit festival under a sacred tree ..the spirit medium woman danced and smoked a sheroot...she went into a trance .....then....shouted "long live Aung San Sue Kyi!" the crowd cheared... I was so shocked to hear this...I put a finger to my lips...fearing arrest...the spirit medium laughed and three more sheroots were lit for her ...and she smoked whirling around the circle of onlookers ....blowing smoke ...everwhere
