Central market
Maimana, Afghanistan
I recall this market scene distinctly because it was a dense, crowded and active market, yet as far as I could see there was not a single commercial advertisement, logo, or brand in view. It was commerce completely outside of the 20th century. I had been in thousands of markets but none this isolated at this scale.

I spent 6 months living in Maimana last year and found it the most amazing place I have visited. Apart from the remoteness and feeling that time has stood still here, the most striking thing about it was the people. Despite their decades of suffering and poverty they were some of the most generous and welcoming people I have met. I laughed more often in their company than in any other.
