Blind musician

It's not unusual for musicians and balladeers to be blind, as this one was. He is singing long, sad ballads, almost wailing while clapping tiny cymbals in his hand. He is accompanied by three other muscians in a tea house in Herat. I gather they may earn some tips.

In his book "The Singer of Tales" John Lord explains his theory that illiterate people are able to memorise large texts. That they usually ryhme and have repetitive phrases are helpful tools. The book is wonderful, and the new edition comes with a CD so you can listen to some of the Epics.
